JIFFI 2023 was the IV National Conference of Researchers in Training: Fostering Interdisciplinarity organized by PhD students from the University of Granada, in collaboration with the International Graduate School and the Doctoral Students’ Council of Representatives. This year, it took place from June 21 to 23 at Espacio V Centenario and the EC3 team was there to present their ongoing research and discuss all things science activity with a very interesting and multidisciplinary audience.
On the first day, Elvira González-Salmón and Victoria Di Césare participated in the posters session showing their research projects in that format. Elvira’s work, titled «Niños furbito y niñas lo que sea: the gender gap in science and the consequences for the scientific knowledge that is created», focuses on identifying and explaining a possible relationship between gender inequality in the scientific system and the type of knowledge it generates. While Victoria’s project, «The cost of conducting local research: implications for scientific trajectories and knowledge production», aims at understanding the effects that current notions of scientific excellence, which tend to be biased against cognitive, geographical and social heterogeneity, have on the trajectories of researchers conducting local research. Both PhD students are currently working under the supervision of EC3’s director Nicolás Robinson-García.
On the second day, Daniel Torres-Salinas and Nicolás were invited alongside physicist Mar Bastero Gil to discuss the new Organic Law of the University System (LOSU according to its acronym in Spanish). They explained to the large audience what the Law consists of, what are its advantages and disadvantages, and what are its implications for evaluation. Finally, on the third day Wenceslao Arroyo-Machado gave a short talk within the Information and Communication Technologies session titled «How many bots are interested in science on Twitter?». Shortly, Wences will be sharing the bots dataset he has been working with at this link. In sum, the whole team is very grateful for this experience and would like to congratulate the organizers for such a warm welcome. See you all next year!
