Researchers Wenceslao Arroyo-Machado (INGENIO, CSIC-UPV) and Daniel Torres-Salinas (University of Granada) have published a correspondence piece in Nature titled “Incentives accelerate progress on open access in Spain.” In it, they analyze the impact of national research evaluation policies and their relationship with the growth of open-access publishing.

The article highlights the role of incentives introduced by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) and the success of the sexenios de transferencia system, which has encouraged researchers to self-archive their publications in institutional repositories.
According to the authors, recent data from the University of Granada show an unprecedented increase in open-access deposits, positioning the institution as a national leader in promoting open science and the dissemination of research outputs.
